The Vestal Youth Football League was founded in 1971 after several community leaders and parents recognized the need for a youth football program to support and educate young people residing within the Town of Vestal.
In the early days of the VYFL, the league practiced and played all of their games at Arnold Park in Vestal. The Vestal Town Board, Recreation Department, local businesses and a variety of community leaders were instrumental in supporting VYFL.
Games occurred all day on Saturdays on two fields. The current upper field back then was a parking lot, so our then upper field was on the current senior league baseball field.
Fundraising was coordinated by a robust VYFL ladies auxiliary. This was an amazing group that handled fundraising along with serving food, drinks and even hot soup and meals from under a tent and from the back of their cars.
During the first 10 years of Vestal Youth Football, some 400 student athletes participated each season. The league was configured into five different divisions. There was a clinical division for young people's ages five and six all the way up to 13 and 14 year olds. In the early days, we played using VYFL rules vs. high school modified rules. The games were amazing!!!
Over the years, VYFL experimented with travel teams that played games as far away as the Ithaca area.
At this point in time many former VYFL players have gone on to become highly regarded youth, high school and college coaches.
One of the most amazing parts of the VYFL is the pride that we as coaches and board members take in seeing how well so many of our players have done in life. Many former players have gone on to distinguish themselves in their respective professions and careers; many as physicians, attorneys, police officers, teachers, trades, prosecutors, business leaders, judges, high school and college coaches. We can guarantee that it is always a thrill when a former player comes up to visit their former VYFL team or coaches.
As a part of this VYFL history, let us share some common inspiring quotes and stories that always HELPED PLAYERS TO REFLECT, GROW and become AMAZING!.
"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog".
"To get respect you have to give respect".
"If you do the easy things perfectly, the hard things will come easily."
"The difference between a champ and a chump is U."
"It's never what you want to be, it's who you want to be".
"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather, a lack of will."
- Vincent T. Lombardi, Green Bay Packers Coach
"When you get what you want in your struggle for self and the world makes you king for a day, Just go to the mirror and look at yourself and see what that man has to say. For it isn't your father, mother or wife whose judgment upon you must pass, the fellow who's verdict counts most in your life is the one staring back from the glass."
"Some people may think you are a straight shooting chum and call you a wonderful guy, but if the man in the glass says you're only a bum if you can't look him straight in the eye. He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest, for he is with you clear up to the end. And you've passed you're most dangerous, difficult test if the man in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life and get pats on your back as you pass, but your final reward will be hard aches and tears if you've cheated the man in the glass."
- MAN IN THE GLASS by Dale Wimbrow
- Bill Parcells, to his team when departing on January 3, 1999.
